Presiding over a review meeting of the Sainik Welfare Department, Health and Sainik Welfare Minister Dr. (Colonel) Dhani Ram Shandil reaffirmed the Himachal Pradesh government’s strong commitment to the welfare of serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their dependents—who make up nearly 14.5% of the state’s population.

Dr. Shandil lauded the unmatched valor of Himachal’s soldiers, calling the state a “land of valour” that has consistently shown a high representation in the armed forces. He praised the selfless service of Himachali soldiers who have safeguarded the nation’s borders under the most challenging conditions.

Prioritizing Projects and Employment:
Dr. Shandil announced that vacant posts in the Sainik Welfare Department would be filled on priority. He directed officials to fast-track ongoing projects such as sainik rest houses, training academies, and war memorials under construction in Nurpur and Fatehpur. He also emphasized timely completion of the war memorial and statue of Major Somnath Sharma in Hamirpur, along with proper maintenance of sainik rest houses.

New Initiatives for Veterans:
The Minister said that the government would soon form a State Sainik Board and a Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Fund Management Committee. Additionally, Veteran Assistance Centres will be set up in Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Bilaspur—all non-military districts.

He added that considering the state’s tough geography and low population density, a proposal to establish additional CSD canteens and extension counters will be submitted to the Central Government.

Employment and Health Support Highlights:
Between 15 January and 10 June,

  • 118 ex-servicemen were provided employment in security services on an outsourced basis.

  • 44 trucks owned by veterans were deployed in cement factories.

  • Over Rs. 8 lakh in aid was disbursed under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme.

  • A total of 4,103 ex-servicemen from Himachal found employment in 144 projects across India.

  • Recruitment of 73 security personnel at AIIMS Bilaspur is currently underway.

The meeting also saw participation from Sainik Welfare Director Brig. Madansheel, Special Secretary Harbans Singh Brascon, and other senior officials.
