A spokesperson of Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) informed that HPSDMA is celebrating International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) with the banner of ‘SAMARTH’. The 13th Edition of ‘SAMARTH‘ will be organized from 1st to 15th October 2023. In addition to exhibitions, workshops at State Level, street play, memory walk and various competitions at District level will be held.
Gram Sabha will be held on 2nd October 2023 on dealing with Monsoon related disasters and promoting safe construction practices which are resistant to hazards like landslide, earthquake, fire, wind, etc. He said that the Mock Drill on 13th October 2023 at 11:00 AM will be organized at school level on hazards like Landslide, Flash Flood, Fire and Earthquake. Competitions like Slogan Writing, Quiz on Disaster, Painting and Poster Making and Essay Writing will be organised for schools children on disaster awareness from 1st to 9th October, 2023.
An Exhibition will be organised from 12th to 14th October 2023 at the Historical Ridge in Shimla which will feature HPSDMA initiatives, Information, Education & Communication activities, display of equipment on search & rescue and modern technology related to disaster management, etc. The main highlight of this event will be the hands-on training sessions designed to equip visitors, especially school children, with essential life-saving skills.
Participants will have the chance to learn CPR techniques, rope knot tying training and use a fire extinguisher, medical first aid, etc. All Government and private educational institutions of Shimla town will be invited for this purpose in addition to the general public, he added. He said that HPSDMA has also developed ‘School Safety Mobile App’ to help schools prepare School Disaster Management Plans by 13th October, 2023 and achieve 100 percent target.
Competitions for all primaries to senior secondary schools will be organized to encourage the best preparation of School Disaster Management Plans. This App is available on both Android & IOS platforms. To incentivize participation and excellence in preparing the School Disaster Management Plan, the top school will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh, the next 3 best entries will receive Rs 50,000 each and 6 best entries will receive Rs 30,000 each.
The prize money will be given on 12 October, 2023 at Shimla which will be used to enhance the existing disaster management set up of the schools. The School Disaster Management Plan prepared till 30 September, 2023 will only be considered for prizes.
