Himachal Pradesh has emerged as a frontrunner in ecological conservation, registering a remarkable rise in forest and tree cover over the past two decades, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced.

According to the latest Forest Survey of India (FSI) report, the state’s total forest cover increased by 1,227.35 sq. km, from 14,353 sq. km in 2003 to 15,580.4 sq. km in 2023—raising forest cover from 25.73% to 28% of the state’s geographical area. Similarly, tree cover has expanded from 491 sq. km to 855.07 sq. km, marking a growth from 0.88% to 1.53% of the total area.

Calling the achievement a result of effective governance, scientific planning, and strong community involvement, CM Sukhu emphasized the role of participatory forest management, particularly by Mahila Mandals, Yuvak Mandals, Self-Help Groups, and forest cooperatives.

Each participating community-based organization is being assigned up to five hectares of blank or degraded forest land for reforestation. Financial assistance of up to ₹1.20 lakh per hectare is being provided, with performance-based incentives offered based on verified sapling survival rates.

The Chief Minister highlighted the state’s focus on:

  • Native species restoration

  • Improved nursery and planting practices

  • Watershed-based land management

  • Joint Forest Management (JFM) initiatives

  • Participatory Forest Restoration Schemes

These efforts have not only enhanced the biodiversity and vegetation density but have also supported livelihoods, strengthened climate resilience, and upheld cultural traditions tied to forests.

He also noted that the state’s progress aligns with India’s climate action commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Green India Mission, adding that Himachal Pradesh is setting a model for how ecological integrity and economic development can go hand in hand.
