In a move to preserve and promote Himachal Pradesh’s rich artisanal heritage, Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan emphasized the urgent need to boost the visibility and market reach of the state’s handicrafts and handloom products. Chairing the 194th Board of Directors meeting of the Himachal Pradesh State Handicrafts and Handloom Corporation Ltd., the Minister instructed officials to produce a promotional video showcasing local crafts, to be circulated widely on social media platforms.
Acknowledging the efforts of the Corporation in supporting artisans and weavers, Chauhan directed that training initiatives be expanded to preserve endangered traditional skills. He also proposed the opening of a show-window-cum-sale counter in Chandigarh to broaden retail access.
The Corporation is currently implementing the Rs. 23.38 crore Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS), benefiting over 1,200 artisans over two years through training, toolkits, and renovation of emporia in key locations like Delhi, Dharamshala, and Manali. Plans for further renovations and establishment of two new emporia are underway.
For 2025-26, the Corporation aims to host 120 Design and Technical Development Workshops and 20 Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, reaching around 2,500 artisans. Additionally, five thematic exhibitions are scheduled to drive product sales within the state.
The Board authorized the Corporation’s Managing Director to pursue diversification and market expansion of Himachal’s handloom products in domestic and international markets, with special emphasis on promoting Himalayan tweed—a unique woolen fabric crafted by local weavers.
Dr. Richa Verma, Managing Director, reported sales totaling Rs. 29.98 crore in 2024-25 and outlined the Corporation’s achievements. The meeting was attended by key officials including Additional Chief Secretary Industries R.D. Nazeem and Director Industries Dr. Yunus.
