Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced that the state government will spend nearly Rs 3,000 crore to procure modern medical equipment for all government medical colleges, aiming to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking during the Question Hour of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s Budget Session, the Chief Minister said advanced robotic surgery machines and other cutting-edge medical equipment are being purchased on the lines of AIIMS, following a fully transparent tender process to ensure quality healthcare services.

He also announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art cancer hospital in Hamirpur to enhance specialized medical facilities. Expansion of postgraduate (PG) courses across state medical colleges was highlighted, with classes already underway at Nahan Medical College, helping address staff shortages.

Regarding staffing at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, Sukhu stated that over 100 Assistant Professor posts would soon be filled. The existing system of walk-in interviews will be replaced by a merit-based selection process with fixed percentage criteria, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The Chief Minister further noted improvements in medical education, including increased pass percentages, and emphasized that PG courses are vital for effective functioning of medical colleges.

In response to a query from Kewal Singh Pathania, Sukhu shared details of funds sanctioned over the past two years for Tanda Medical College, expenditures on specific equipment, and steps taken to repair and maintain lift facilities. He assured that funds are being properly utilized for upgrading machinery and infrastructure.
