The Department of Posts has released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the 125th anniversary of the iconic Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO), celebrating more than a century of India’s pioneering contributions to solar research. The stamp was officially unveiled by  S. Rajendra Kumar, Chief Postmaster General of Karnataka Circle, during a special ceremony held at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, in the presence of distinguished dignitaries including  A. S. Kiran Kumar, Chairperson of IIA’s Governing Council and former ISRO Chairman.

Nestled in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, KSO has been a cornerstone of India’s astronomical heritage since its establishment on 1 April 1899. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, it is renowned for maintaining one of the world’s longest and most continuous observational records of the Sun. For 125 years, KSO has led vital research on sunspots, solar flares, and solar activity, playing a pivotal role in deepening global understanding of solar physics.

The commemorative stamp stands as a tribute to KSO’s enduring legacy and invites philatelists, scientists, and the public to celebrate India’s long-standing commitment to space and solar science. The stamp is now available at Philatelic Bureaus nationwide and online via www.epostoffice.gov.in.
