In a major step toward modernising India’s geospatial and postal infrastructure, the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, launched two innovative digital platforms on May 27, 2025 — ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’. These initiatives, aligned with the National Geospatial Policy 2022, aim to strengthen the country’s addressing systems through advanced digital and location-based technologies.

The ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ platform introduces the Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) — a geo-coded, grid-based, open-source digital addressing system developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC. This system supports Address-as-a-Service (AaaS), allowing users to locate or generate a DIGIPIN based on geographic coordinates. It is designed to improve logistics, emergency response, and last-mile service delivery, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. The DIGIPIN system is now open to all government bodies and developers, with complete documentation and source code publicly available on GitHub.

Simultaneously, the ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portal enhances India’s traditional six-digit PIN Code system, originally introduced in 1972. The Department of Posts undertook a nationwide geo-fencing exercise to accurately map PIN Code boundaries. Using GNSS location technology, the new application enables users to identify their correct PIN Code and provide feedback for ongoing data refinement. The geospatial PIN Code dataset has been published on the Open Government Data Platform for broader use.

Speaking at the launch, Vandita Kaul, Secretary of the Department of Posts, emphasized that these tools reflect the government’s commitment to digital transformation and precision governance. “DIGIPIN will ensure that every citizen, even in the remotest part of the country, is digitally locatable and serviceable,” she said.

Both applications support public feedback, encouraging citizens, developers, and institutions to help enhance their accuracy and usability. With this launch, India Post cements its role as not only a postal service provider but also a key driver of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in India.
