The Union Budget 2026–27 has set the stage for a transformative decade in Indian sports, announcing the Khelo India Mission to create a long-term, outcome-driven framework for developing the nation’s sports ecosystem. With an unprecedented allocation of ₹4,479.88 crore—the highest-ever funding for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports—the budget underscores the government’s sustained commitment to youth development, mass participation, and sporting excellence.
The Khelo India Mission, building on the existing scheme, aims to create a seamless pipeline from grassroots participation to elite performance, fostering holistic development and integrating sports with national capacity-building goals. For 2026–27, ₹924.35 crore has been earmarked for Khelo India, marking a new phase of outcome-oriented implementation.
Complementing this, a dedicated ₹500 crore sports goods manufacturing initiative will boost domestic capacity, promote innovation in design and materials, generate employment, and position India as a global hub for high-quality sports equipment.
A distinctive feature of this budget is its Yuva Shakti-driven approach, inspired by ideas from the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026. By involving youth in policy formulation, the government aims to ensure relevance, innovation, and alignment with generational aspirations. In line with this, the MY Bharat Budget Quest 2026 has been launched to enhance youth understanding of budget provisions, with top performers getting a chance to interact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that sports provide multiple avenues for employment, skill development, and economic growth. The vision is clear: position India among the Top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and Top 5 by 2047.
With mission-mode implementation, unprecedented financial support, and a youth-centered approach, the Union Budget 2026–27 lays the foundation for a high-performing, inclusive, and future-ready sports ecosystem, contributing to national pride, employment generation, and India’s emergence as a global sporting power.
