International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed at IGMC

The department of Psychiatry IGMC, Shimla observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 2024 on 26th June under the guidance of Dr. Dinesh Dutt Sharma Professor and Head, Psychiatry. The theme for the year is, ‘The evidence is clear: Invest in prevention.’ Dr. Sita Thakur Principal IGMC Shimla presided over as the chief guest.

Dr. G.K. Verma Professor and Head Department of Dermatology, Dr. Nidhi Sharma, Dr. Suman Lata, Dr. Ravi Sharma, Dr. Ayush Sharma and junior residents of the department were also present. Awareness session on drug dependence, facts and myths related to dependence and its treatment was conducted which was attended by about 40 patients with substance dependence in different stages of recovery and their caregivers.

Dr. Dinesh Dutt Sharma Professor & Head of Psychiatry IGMC, Shimla introduced the importance of the day and theme of this year. He emphasized that patients with alcohol and drug dependence should be considered as sick people rather than bad people. He also explained that it is a chronic relapsing disorder and treatment is possible and available. He discussed the prevention strategies for substance use disorders. The patients and caregivers shared their experiences with regard to their recovery process.

Dr. Sita Thakur addressed the audience and highlighted the role of early intervention and family support in handling the drug dependence and associated stigma. Dr. Nidhi Sharma concluded the event with vote of thanks.
