Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur on Saturday expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), alleging that the Sukhu government has failed to ensure the availability of basic resources required for the smooth functioning of the corporation.
Reacting to reports of buses being operated by shifting tyres and other essential parts from one vehicle to another due to shortages in depots, including the Chief Minister’s home district, Thakur alleged that the government was compromising passenger safety. He claimed that several buses were being kept off the roads because of the shortage of tyres and spare parts, while others were being operated despite poor mechanical condition.
The Leader of Opposition alleged that transport services across the state have been severely affected, with several rural and key routes either discontinued or operated with ageing buses. He said such conditions could pose safety risks, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season.
Thakur also accused the government of neglecting HRTC employees and pensioners, alleging delays in the payment of salaries, allowances and pension-related dues. He claimed that this had adversely affected employee morale and caused hardship to retired staff awaiting their pending benefits.
He further alleged that financial mismanagement and policy failures had weakened the corporation and warned that continued neglect could erode public confidence in HRTC. He urged the government to strengthen the corporation by ensuring the timely availability of tyres and spare parts, restoring suspended routes and clearing the pending dues of employees and pensioners.
