To mark the auspicious occasion of Shravan Purnima, the Department of Language and Culture, Himachal Pradesh, is organizing the State-Level Sanskrit Day celebration on August 28, 2026. The prestigious event will take place at Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Chamunda, located in Kangra district. Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Berwa will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Professor Satyam Kumari, Director of the Central Sanskrit University (Vedavyas Campus, Balahar), will attend as the Guest of Honour.

Recognized as the mother of all languages and the storehouse of ancient wisdom, Sanskrit holds the esteemed status of being Himachal Pradesh’s second official language. Highlighting the event’s framework, Reema Kashyap, Director of Language and Culture, shared that the inaugural session will commence at 10:30 AM with a keynote lecture on the scientific relevance of Sanskrit in modern times, delivered by Dr. Rameshwar Sharma from Banaras Hindu University. Following the lecture, around 100 students representing 15 Sanskrit colleges from across the state will compete in speech, quiz, translation, and shloka recitation competitions. The afternoon session will feature a vibrant Sanskrit Kavi Sammelan, bringing together nearly 30 poets from across Himachal Pradesh.

Alongside the literary sessions, attendees will have access to two major exhibitions. The State Archives will display rare historical records, while the Himachal Art Culture and Language Academy (Shimla) will showcase a book stall featuring publications on the state’s rich heritage, art, and history available for purchase. Additional Director Chandan Kapoor invited local students, scholars, and the public to visit the venue to experience and explore the state’s profound cultural legacy firsthand.
