The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has appreciated the efforts of the Himachal Pradesh Government for its focused initiatives aimed at the development of tribal regions and the welfare of tribal communities across the state.

The Chairman and Members of the Commission, currently on a two-day visit to Shimla, chaired a comprehensive review meeting with senior state officials to assess ongoing schemes, challenges, and possible solutions related to tribal areas.

Chairing the meeting, NCST Chairman Antar Singh Arya noted that despite difficult terrain and geographical constraints, Himachal Pradesh has made commendable progress in tribal development. He expressed satisfaction over improvements in key sectors such as education, healthcare, road connectivity, electricity, and drinking water supply in tribal regions.

Following a detailed departmental review, the Chairman issued several directions to further strengthen service delivery and improve facilities for tribal populations. Members of the Commission, Nirupam Chakma and Dr. Asha Lakra, also shared suggestions and recommendations for enhancing developmental outcomes.

The Commission emphasized the need for faster resolution of cases under the Forest Rights Act (FRA) to ensure timely benefits for eligible beneficiaries. It was also noted with appreciation that Himachal Pradesh has reported no cases of Sickle Cell Anemia in its tribal areas, unlike several other states.

Earlier, the Commission interacted with tribal youth, who shared their perspectives on education, employment, social empowerment, and development challenges. The delegation also held discussions with representatives of tribal communities, forest conservation committees, FRA beneficiaries, and social organizations.

Community representatives from the Hati, Gujjar, Gaddi, Kinnaura and other tribal groups presented their concerns and suggestions before the Commission.

Chairman Antar Singh Arya assured that all genuine issues raised would be taken up seriously and necessary steps would be initiated to ensure maximum welfare of tribal populations.

On the second day of the visit, the Commission also reviewed ongoing development works with the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation and the Public Works Department, and held discussions with Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly from the state.
