The State Government of Himachal Pradesh has formed a Carbon Credit Committee under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary, Forests. This initiative aims to explore the carbon market and generate additional revenue for the state, said Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Objective of the Carbon Credit Committee
The 10-member committee will analyze both international and domestic carbon markets to develop sector-specific strategies for Himachal Pradesh. The primary goals include:
- Identifying potential carbon credit projects in collaboration with various government departments.
- Assisting in framing a state climate policy and related frameworks for carbon credits.
- Guiding government departments in formulating projects to secure carbon credits.
- Developing procedures for engaging project developers, consultants, buyers, and traders.
- Organizing regular interactions with administrators of the Indian Carbon Market and international carbon standards.
Enhancing Himachal’s Carbon Credit Potential
The Chief Minister emphasized that the committee will study best practices from across India and analyze successful projects in other states. Additionally, it will recommend policy adjustments to align new and existing schemes with carbon credit opportunities.
By tapping into the carbon market, Himachal Pradesh aims to enhance environmental sustainability while generating additional financial resources for the state’s development.
