Chief Minister, while addressing a dialogue session with faculty members of IGMC Shimla and the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialty, Chamiyana, announced that nurses who served during the COVID-19 pandemic will be given priority in upcoming recruitments. The discussion focused on future challenges in the health sector, during which the CM assured full government support to medical colleges based on their specific needs.
He stated that the state government is investing ₹1350 crore in medical technology to modernize healthcare infrastructure. As part of this effort, equipment over 20 years old in government hospitals will be replaced within a year. Robotic surgery units will be introduced soon in Chamiyana and Tanda Medical Colleges, while 3-Tesla MRI machines will be installed in phases across all medical colleges.
Highlighting past neglect, CM Sukhu criticized former governments for failing to prioritize healthcare. In contrast, the present administration is focusing on strengthening both education and health sectors. He announced that funds will be provided for hostel construction for medical students and parking facilities for hospital staff and patients.
To address manpower shortages, the government is fast-tracking the recruitment of doctors, para-medical staff, technicians, and nurses—especially those who served selflessly during the pandemic. The aim is to ensure international-standard doctor-patient and nurse-patient ratios for better healthcare delivery.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that premier institutions like IGMC have become mere referral centers and emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms. The state has already spent ₹100 crore on IGMC Shimla, with an additional ₹200 crore earmarked for further improvements. Despite financial constraints, especially after restoring the old pension scheme, the government remains committed to enhancing healthcare services.
Sukhu also underscored the importance of empathetic communication between doctors and patients, stating that kind words from doctors can ease a patient’s suffering. Health and Family Welfare Minister Colonel (Dr.) Dhani Ram Shandil praised the efforts of medical professionals and emphasized continued progress in medical education and infrastructure. Health Secretary M. Sudha Devi outlined the ongoing reforms, while Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani, MLA Harish Janartha, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
