CM Sukhu today inaugurated a new helicopter service operating between Sanjauli and Rampur, fulfilling a promise made during a previous visit to the region. Launched under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN) as part of the Heli-HOP Himachal Helicopter Service, the flight will run three days a week on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The flight route connects Sanjauli to Rampur and extends up to Reckong Peo, departing Sanjauli at 9:55 AM and completing its full round-trip circuit by 12:45 PM. During the launch event, CM Sukhu also announced that similar air routes connecting Hamirpur, Chamba, and Palampur will be rolled out within the next four months.
Speaking on the occasion, the CM emphasized that the initiative represents progressive thinking and immense growth potential for the hill state rather than just being a mode of transit. He highlighted that faster travel would boost tourism, support local businesses, and create fresh employment opportunities. To further build on this momentum, the state government is actively searching for suitable land in Shimla to strengthen air infrastructure, while working to construct and develop 16 heliports across various district headquarters.
Financially, the Himachal Pradesh government is bearing the full cost of the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for these flight operations, amounting to approximately ₹35.70 lakh per month. The Chief Minister added that ongoing efforts are also dedicated to expanding Kangra’s Gaggal Airport, for which the government has already released ₹2,400 crore from its own resources for land acquisition. Once the airport expansion is complete, the state plans to link all district headquarters via helicopter routes, ensuring remote areas gain convenient access to development and economic opportunities.
