Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla interacted with inmates at the Model Central Correctional Home, Kanda, today, commending the efforts under the “Har Hath Ko Kaam” initiative, where inmates are engaged in productive tasks. The goods made by inmates are sold through the HimKaara store, with 40% of the profits returned to them as wages.
Addressing the inmates, the Governor emphasized that vocational training helps prisoners become self-reliant, support their families, and even create employment opportunities by starting their own ventures after release. He also spoke against drug abuse, calling drug addiction the “biggest crime,” noting that consuming and distributing drugs harms both individuals and society.
The Governor appreciated the cultural performances by inmates and staff, highlighting that one staff member recently won a silver medal for singing at the national level. He also praised the inmates for their recitation of a Bhagwad Geeta chapter, lauding the jail superintendent for fostering such initiatives.
Shukla honored representatives from government and non-government organizations contributing to prison welfare, including the Art of Living, ISKCON Shimla, Rotary Clubs, Psychology Council, and others.
Earlier, the Governor visited an exhibition of inmate-made products, offered prayers at the temple in the correctional home, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, and planted a sapling. Additional Director General of Prisons, Abhishek Trivedi, highlighted that a recent exhibition at Gaiety Theatre generated Rs 3 lakh in income from prisoner-made products.
