In a landmark move set to revolutionize Bihar’s energy landscape, SJVN (Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Bihar for the development of the 1000 MW Hathidah Durgawati Pumped Storage Project (PSP). This strategic collaboration will significantly enhance Bihar’s power generation capabilities and contribute to the state’s renewable energy goals.

The MoU was signed in Patna in the presence of Vijay Kumar Sinha, the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, along with Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Minister of Energy, Nitish Mishra, Minister of Industries, and Raj Kumar Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN.

Key Features of the 1000 MW Hathidah Durgawati Pumped Storage Project

The Hathidah Durgawati Pumped Storage Project is planned to be developed on the Durgawati River, located in Kaimur District, Bihar. The project will have an installed capacity of 1000 MW, divided into four units of 250 MW each. Upon completion, it will generate 6.325 million units of peak energy per day and an annual peak energy of 2308.65 million units (MU). With an estimated investment of ₹5,663 crore, the project is set to bring significant economic growth to the region.

Employment Opportunities and Economic Impact

The Hathidah Durgawati Pumped Storage Project will create direct and indirect employment for over 5,000 people, providing a substantial boost to the local economy. In addition to job creation, the project will attract an investment of approximately ₹10,000 crore, which will further stimulate the economic development of Bihar.

Pumped Storage: A Solution to Bihar’s Energy Needs

The primary advantage of pumped storage is its ability to provide on-demand electricity. By using excess power during off-peak hours to pump water to an upper reservoir, the water can be released during peak hours to generate power. This will enhance grid stability and ensure that Bihar can meet its growing energy demands, especially during times of peak consumption.

The Hathidah Durgawati project is one of four pumped storage projects allocated to SJVN by the Government of Bihar. These projects, including Telharkund PSP (400 MW), Sinafdar PSP (345 MW), Panchgotia PSP (225 MW), and the Hathidah Durgawati PSP, are part of a larger effort to boost the state’s energy infrastructure. With the support of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, which appointed SJVN as the nodal agency for developing pumped storage projects in Bihar, the state is poised for a green energy revolution.

What Does This Mean for Bihar’s Power Grid?

The 1000 MW Hathidah Durgawati PSP will play a crucial role in securing Bihar’s power future, providing a reliable backup energy source during grid fluctuations or power shortages. It will also support the state’s renewable energy projects by storing excess solar and wind energy, thus ensuring a continuous and sustainable energy supply.

In addition, the levelized tariff for electricity generated from the Hathidah Durgawati PSP is expected to be ₹9.39 per kWh (with a pumping energy rate of ₹3 per kWh). This tariff rate positions the project as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional power generation methods.

SJVN’s Vision for India’s Renewable Energy Future

SJVN has been at the forefront of India’s push for clean and renewable energy. Apart from the Hathidah Durgawati PSP, SJVN is currently developing over 12,000 MW of pumped storage projects across various states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Mizoram, and Himachal Pradesh. The company’s dedication to green energy aligns with India’s climate goals and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Conclusion: A New Era of Power Generation for Bihar

The signing of the MoU between SJVN and the Government of Bihar marks the beginning of a new era for Bihar’s energy sector. With significant investments, job creation, and an innovative approach to energy storage, the 1000 MW Hathidah Durgawati Pumped Storage Project promises to be a game-changer for the state. Not only will it provide reliable, sustainable energy to the people of Bihar, but it will also set the stage for a greener, more energy-efficient future for the entire country. Stay tuned for more updates on the project and other renewable energy initiatives spearheaded by SJVN and the Government of Bihar.
