The Industries Department of Himachal Pradesh has launched a state-wide special campaign to curb illegal mining, which continues to pose serious threats to the environment, law and order, and the equitable distribution of natural resources. Director of Industries, Dr. Yunus, stated that from April to July 2025, the department registered 895 cases of illegal mining and imposed fines amounting to ₹44.31 lakh. To strengthen enforcement, the department initiated a focused campaign on August 1, 2025, aimed at tightening control, enhancing mineral conservation, and restoring public trust. So far, 122 new cases have been identified during the campaign, with ₹3.55 lakh in fines levied in 46 cases, while 76 cases are under legal review. All confirmed illegal mining sites have been immediately shut down to prevent further violations.
Dr. Yunus emphasized that mineral conservation is not only an administrative duty but also a shared social responsibility. Field officers have been directed to maintain constant vigilance and collaborate with other departments for more effective enforcement. The department’s complaint cell has received 267 grievances through various channels—including landline, mobile, WhatsApp, and email—with the highest number of reports coming from Kangra, Solan, Bilaspur, Una, and Mandi. Reiterating the state government’s zero-tolerance stance, Dr. Yunus warned that strict action, including fines, machinery seizure, and legal prosecution, will be taken against violators. He called upon the public to participate actively in the campaign by reporting any illegal mining activities, stressing that even a single complaint can play a vital role in preserving Himachal Pradesh’s natural heritage.
Citizens can lodge complaints via WhatsApp at 08988500249, by landline at 0177-2990575, or through email at geologicalwing@gmail.com. Dr. Yunus urged residents to join the department’s efforts in safeguarding the state’s rich and valuable natural resources.
