The Himachal Pradesh government has announced plans to revamp the historic Ice-Skating Rink in Shimla with a major investment of ₹20.22 crore aimed at boosting tourism and promoting winter sports in the hill state. Established in 1920 during the British era, the rink in the Lakkar Bazar area is one of Asia’s oldest and largest natural ice-skating venues and has long attracted both tourists and aspiring skaters.

Under the redevelopment plan, outdated and dilapidated structures at the site will be removed to make way for modern facilities. This includes the demolition of older buildings that no longer serve functional purposes, allowing space for upgraded infrastructure and new amenities designed to deliver a world-class experience to visitors.

The project’s focus is not only on tourism but also on sports development. The enhanced rink is expected to support ice sports such as ice hockey and figure skating, providing improved training opportunities for enthusiasts and professionals. Officials have highlighted that the revamped facility could host national and international winter sports events, further elevating Shimla’s prominence on the sports map.

The financial plan for the renovation earmarks funds for various components of the infrastructure. A significant portion will go toward strengthening the ice-skating surface and related facilities, while separate allocations are made for a new club house, amenities like souvenir shops and stores, and the removal of obsolete buildings.
