This news highlights India’s first-ever clinical study that combines Ayurveda—the traditional Indian system of medicine—with modern TB treatment. The study is significant because tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health challenge in India, which accounts for about 25% of the global TB burden.
The aim of the study is to see if Ayurveda can support standard anti-TB treatment by improving nutrition, immunity, recovery, and overall quality of life for patients. It’s not replacing modern medicine but integrating traditional and modern approaches to create a more holistic, patient-centered care system.
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that this approach reflects a “whole-of-science” and “whole-of-government” strategy, combining biotechnology research with traditional medicine, and involving over 1,200 patients across India.
The initiative also aims to reduce social stigma around TB and promote awareness, as many patients hide symptoms due to fear or misconceptions. Overall, it’s a major step toward India’s goal of TB-free India (TB Mukt Bharat) and a global example of integrating traditional knowledge with modern medical science.
