CM Sukhu on Thursday launched the Thematic Garden Project at Durgesh Aranya International Zoo in Dehra, Kangra district, and released Rs. 4 crore for its implementation. The funds were handed over through the Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board (HPSBB) to the Chief Wildlife Warden.

Spread across 22,247 square metres (around 5.5 acres), the thematic garden is aimed at conserving the state’s biodiversity while promoting environmental education, scientific research and eco-tourism. The project has been designed to offer visitors an interactive experience of Himachal Pradesh’s diverse plant life and natural heritage.

The proposed garden will feature a Ficarium showcasing different species of Ficus, an Arboretum with indigenous and exotic tree species, a Bamboosetum displaying a variety of bamboo species, and a watchtower providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said biodiversity conservation remains central to the state’s sustainable development agenda. He said the thematic garden would serve as a hub for conservation awareness, environmental education, experiential learning and scientific research while creating new opportunities for nature-based tourism.

Sukhu said the project would benefit students, researchers, tourists and nature enthusiasts by providing a platform to better understand and appreciate Himachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity.

The Chief Minister also lauded the Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board and the Forest Department for conceptualising the initiative, expressing confidence that the project would enhance the appeal of Durgesh Aranya International Zoo and establish it as a model destination for biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism.

The project will be implemented by the Chief Wildlife Warden, Himachal Pradesh, with technical support from the Himachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board.
