In India, September 20 is observed as Railway Protection Force (RPF) Raising Day, which serves as a dedicated occasion to promote railway safety, passenger security, and asset protection across the country’s vast rail network. This date commemorates the landmark event in 1985 when the Indian Parliament passed the Railway Protection Force (Amendment) Act, officially elevating the RPF from a basic watch-and-ward service into a statutory armed force of the Union. Every year on this day, the Ministry of Railways and RPF divisions nationwide organize ceremonial parades to honor meritorious personnel, while conducting public outreach campaigns, safety demonstrations, and awareness drives. These initiatives emphasize critical safety practices such as avoiding track crossings and footboard travel, while also highlighting key passenger welfare operations like Operation Meri Saheli for women’s security and anti-trafficking efforts across railway stations.
