21 February is observed as International Mother Language Day, a day that emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as the value of multilingualism worldwide. This day was officially declared by UNESCO in 1999 to honor the 1952 Language Movement in Bangladesh, when students and activists bravely protested to secure recognition for their mother tongue, Bengali, against efforts to impose another language. International Mother Language Day serves as a reminder that every language carries unique traditions, knowledge, and cultural identity, and it encourages nations to support multilingual education and protect the linguistic rights of their people.
