D-Day refers to June 6, 1944, when Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, the massive invasion of Nazi-occupied Normandy in France during World War II. On this day, troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations landed on five beaches—Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword—under heavy German resistance. The operation marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control and became a decisive turning point in the war. Despite extremely difficult conditions and heavy casualties, the success of the landings paved the way for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.
