The Transport Department of Himachal Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone by generating a revenue of ₹1,236.53 crore over the past 16 months. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri attributed this achievement to the transparency, efficiency, and corrective measures introduced under his leadership since taking charge of the department.
Out of the total earnings, ₹912.18 crore was collected during the financial year 2024–25, while ₹324.35 crore was generated in the first four months of FY 2025–26 (April to July 2025). Agnihotri emphasized that this growth reflects the success of policy implementation, digital initiatives, and the dedication of the department’s officers and staff.
Highlighting the importance of the transport sector, the Deputy CM said the department is not just responsible for regulating road operations but also plays a vital role in accelerating the state’s economic development. He noted that key focus areas included enhancing transparency, strengthening tax collection systems, and digitalizing public services to improve access and reduce corruption.
Breaking down the revenue sources, during FY 2024–25, ₹160.28 crore was collected under the Indian Motor Vehicles Act through permit fees, license fees, and penalties. Under the State Motor Vehicles Act, ₹712.82 crore was earned via token tax, composite fees, special registration charges, SRT, and green tax. An additional ₹39.08 crore came from green tax and miscellaneous charges.
In the current fiscal year (April to July 2025), the department has already collected ₹63.09 crore under the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, ₹250.01 crore under the State Motor Vehicles Act, and ₹11.25 crore from other sources. Department officials estimate that the total revenue for FY 2025–26 could surpass ₹1,000 crore by year-end.
Agnihotri also spoke about ongoing reforms, including technical upgrades and the introduction of online services such as vehicle registration, permit issuance, tax payments, and monitoring. These initiatives have improved transparency, minimized fraudulent activities, and made services more accessible to citizens.
Concluding his remarks, the Deputy Chief Minister congratulated the transport department team and reiterated that surpassing ₹1,236 crore in revenue is a strong step towards making Himachal Pradesh financially robust.
