In a major step towards making examinations more accessible for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the introduction of the ‘Centre of Choice’ facility for all PwBD candidates. Under this initiative, PwBD applicants will be allotted the examination centre of their preference, as indicated in their application form, ensuring convenience and ease in appearing for UPSC exams.

Dr. Ajay Kumar, Chairman of UPSC, highlighted that analysis of examination centre data over the past five years revealed that popular centres such as Delhi, Cuttack, Patna, and Lucknow often reach full capacity early. This situation had previously forced PwBD candidates to opt for less convenient centres. “With this decision, every PwBD candidate will now be assured of their preferred centre,” Dr. Kumar said.

To implement the facility, the Commission will first allocate seats at each centre to both PwBD and non-PwBD candidates. Once a centre reaches full capacity, it will remain available exclusively for PwBD candidates. Additionally, UPSC will make arrangements to expand capacity where needed, ensuring no PwBD candidate is denied their chosen centre.

This initiative underscores UPSC’s commitment to providing an inclusive and accessible examination environment for all candidates.
