Water Conservation: A Story of Revival and Hope

In the village of Sarog, situated in the Theog area, a once vibrant and essential pond had been struggling for survival due to years of neglect and silt accumulation. The pond, which had been a crucial water source for the villagers and several natural springs around, was now almost dry, leading to severe water shortages. Years ago, it had even caught the attention of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who visited the site during his visit to Shimla and admired its significance. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation worsened, and the pond was filled with silt, leaving almost no water and causing a breeding ground for pollution.

Determined to bring the pond back to life, the villagers and the local administration united and began a major cleaning and restoration effort. With the support of various agencies, including the Manrega Scheme, which allocated ₹5 lakh for the restoration, and further financial help from SJVNL and the Public Works Department, approximately ₹60 lakh was spent. This restoration project was a step forward in preserving natural resources and reviving the area.

The result was nothing short of miraculous. Not only did the pond revive, but several surrounding natural springs in nearby villages like Khalal, Thana, Dhang, and Daroh also began to flow again. The village’s water scarcity problem was alleviated, and villagers witnessed a positive change in their daily lives. The revived pond, now holding 80,000 liters of water, also serves as an essential resource for firefighting and other community uses.

The site also saw the installation of an open-air gym, giving villagers a place to exercise and enjoy the surroundings. The rejuvenated pond, beautifully landscaped with solar lights and walkways, became a beacon of hope and a reminder of the importance of water conservation.

Manrega has played a vital role in this initiative, contributing significantly to water conservation efforts by funding projects that build irrigation channels, check dams, and other rural infrastructure. The restoration of the Sarog pond is a clear example of how collective community action, combined with government support, can bring about significant environmental change. Encouraged by the success, the local administration is planning to establish a library near the pond and continue working towards preserving natural resources across the region.

In conclusion, this restoration effort has not only revived the pond but also revitalized the natural springs and groundwater levels in the area, offering a sustainable solution to water scarcity. This initiative, driven by the local people and the administration, serves as a model for other villages to follow in the fight for water conservation.
