In a significant move to improve public transport services in Himachal Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri announced that the Transport Department is set to modernize the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) with the induction of 600 new buses, including 350 electric and 250 diesel-powered vehicles.
Speaking informally with media persons in Solan, Agnihotri emphasized the government’s commitment to providing timely and quality transport services across the state. He stated that the new buses will cater to the geographical challenges of Himachal Pradesh, with all additions being either 37-seater or 42-seater capacity, ensuring both accessibility and comfort.

Old Buses to Be Phased Out, Focus on Environmental Conservation
Highlighting the shortcomings of the previous government, Mukesh Agnihotri pointed out that no new buses were added to the HRTC fleet during the last tenure. In contrast, the current government is not only investing in new buses but also adopting eco-friendly measures to reduce the carbon footprint of public transport.
He revealed that nearly 1,000 old buses are being replaced in a phased manner to ensure safer and more reliable transport options for the public.
New Tempo Traveller Services to Enhance Rural Connectivity
To further improve last-mile connectivity, the Deputy CM said that the government is planning to introduce Tempo Traveller services in suitable and underserved areas. These vehicles will cater to hilly and remote regions where large buses cannot operate efficiently.
Senior Leaders and Officials Present
The announcement was made in the presence of senior Congress leaders and departmental officers, who reiterated their support for the government’s vision to make Himachal Pradesh a model state for clean and efficient public transport.
