The Congress party paid a powerful tribute to one of Himachal Pradesh’s tallest leaders, late former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, with the unveiling of his statue at the historic Ridge Ground in Shimla by Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The event also featured a photo exhibition chronicling his life, legacy, and decades of public service.

Addressing the gathering, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the occasion a moment of immense pride for the people of Himachal. Remembering Virbhadra Singh as a people’s leader whose unwavering commitment to truth and service set him apart, she remarked,

“Just as Mahatma Gandhi guided the nation, Virbhadra Singh guided Himachal Pradesh.”

Priyanka Gandhi strongly criticised the Central Government, accusing it of treating Himachal Pradesh unfairly due to its Congress-led government. Referring to the recent natural disasters that caused large-scale devastation and displacement, she said:

“Despite repeated appeals by Chief Minister Sukhu, the Centre has failed to extend meaningful support. Relief remained elusive while the state government stood by its people.”

She also highlighted the Gandhi family’s long-standing bond with Himachal — from Indira Gandhi to the present — and described her personal connection to the state as both emotional and enduring.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, welcoming Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi, hailed Virbhadra Singh as a visionary who built the foundation of modern Himachal. He credited the state’s development — including institutions like IIT Mandi, IIM Sirmaur, and the Central University — to successive Congress governments and their focus on inclusive growth.

The CM also noted that Priyanka Gandhi’s residence in the state has given a boost to tourism and reinforced the family’s deep connection with Himachal.

“This is a legacy of roads, institutions, and empowerment,” he said.

Pratibha Singh, HPCC President and wife of the late leader, called the ceremony both emotional and uplifting. She praised CM Sukhu for continuing the Congress tradition of simple living and dedication to public service, reminiscent of Virbhadra Singh’s own leadership style.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri described Virbhadra Singh as the “architect of modern Himachal”, acknowledging his immense contribution to education, women’s welfare, and governance. He paid homage to Indira Gandhi and Y.S. Parmar, recognizing their foundational roles in Himachal’s statehood and growth.

Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, son of the late Virbhadra Singh, said the event was not just ceremonial but deeply emotional, echoing the love and respect of the people. He reaffirmed his commitment to uphold his father’s ideals, adding:

“I strive every day to live up to the path he set — of truth, trust, and tireless public service.”
