The International Lavi Fair at Rampur Bushahr in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, has been a historic annual event since the 17th century, originating from a trade treaty between the Bushahr King and Tibetan rulers. Traditionally, the fair was a hub for trading goods, livestock, and woolen products—the term “Lavi” derives from “Lowi,” meaning to cut wool.
A highlight of the fair is the Chamurthi horse, a hardy breed from the Tibetan plateau, often called the “Ship of the Cold Desert” for its sure-footedness, high-altitude adaptability, and resilience in extreme cold. These horses are primarily bred in Pin Valley (Lahaul Spiti) and Bhaba Valley (Kinnaur).
To promote their trade, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Himachal Pradesh, along with the Shimla district administration, organizes the annual Horse Mandi and Horse Show ahead of the fair. Buyers come from local areas as well as Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand.
This year’s Horse Show will take place from November 1–3, 2025, at Rampur Bushahr. Registration of horses is scheduled for November 1, followed by a Kisan Goshthi and awareness camp for horse rearers on November 2. The concluding day will feature horse races and a balloon burst competition, with awards presented to the best horses by the chief guest.
The event not only preserves the unique Chamurthi breed but also significantly boosts the local economy by attracting traders and enthusiasts from Himachal Pradesh and neighboring states.
