CM Sukhu today reviewed the progress of the 450 MW Shongtong–Karcham Hydroelectric Project on the Satluj River during his two-day visit to Kinnaur district. Upon arrival, he inspected key project components including the powerhouse, surge shaft, and barrage site, and interacted with engineers and workers.
The Chief Minister directed the concerned departments to accelerate construction work and ensure completion of the first phase by January 2027, while setting a target for full project completion by the end of the current financial year. He reiterated the State Government’s commitment to strengthening clean energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable development in Himachal Pradesh.
He said the project will significantly enhance the state’s power generation capacity, improve energy self-reliance, and support environmentally sustainable growth. Despite several challenges, the government has ensured continuous monitoring and effective project management, with technical interventions being implemented to resolve site-specific issues and maintain construction pace.
Officials informed that around 75 percent of the project work has been completed. Major civil components such as the barrage, head race tunnel, and powerhouse structures are in advanced stages, while electro-mechanical works are progressing in phases in line with the construction schedule.
Once completed, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,579 million units of electricity annually and contribute nearly ₹900 crore to the state economy each year, significantly strengthening Himachal Pradesh’s energy portfolio and grid stability.
