The rejection of the Constitutional Amendment Bill on women’s reservation in Parliament has quickly echoed in Himachal Pradesh’s political circles, sharpening tensions between the Congress and the BJP.
The development has now turned into a state-level political flashpoint, with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur putting forward sharply contrasting views. Both leaders have interpreted the national decision in line with their respective political positions as the Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections approach.
BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur accused opposition parties of blocking women’s empowerment initiatives, alleging that an “anti-women stance” was once again visible in the Lok Sabha. He said the Constitutional Amendment Bill linked to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act could not be passed due to opposition from Congress, TMC, DMK, and the Samajwadi Party. Calling the outcome and reactions to it “unacceptable,” he termed the conduct “beyond imagination.”
He further stated that repeated delays in implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies reflected what he described as an opposing mindset to women’s empowerment. According to him, such positions were neither in the interest of women nor the country.
Thakur also warned that those obstructing the long-pending proposal would face strong political repercussions, adding that the BJP would continue its push for the rights and empowerment of “Matri Shakti.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that constitutional values cannot be compromised under the pretext of protecting women’s interests. He stressed that decisions in a democracy must be based on broad consensus and balanced deliberation.
He added that the Congress has consistently opposed any move it believes could weaken national unity. Expressing appreciation for the leadership of the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, he reiterated, “Long live the Constitution.”
The sharply opposing interpretations from both sides have further widened the political divide over the issue.
Political observers believe the matter is set to become a key campaign theme in the upcoming Panchayati Raj elections in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in rural areas. Both parties are expected to step up outreach efforts, with the BJP projecting it as an issue of women’s rights, while the Congress positions itself as a defender of constitutional process and democratic balance.
Analysts also note that the emotional and symbolic significance of women’s reservation could strongly influence voter sentiment, especially among women in rural regions, making it a crucial factor in the grassroots electoral contest.
