Shimla is grappling with an intense tourist surge this holiday season, with traffic records showing more than 70,000 vehicles plying between Solan and the capital city in just three days. Alongside this, over 25,000 out-of-state vehicles have also entered the region, significantly increasing pressure on the hill town’s already narrow road network.
In response, Shimla district police have rolled out an expanded traffic management system across the city to keep movement steady and minimize congestion for both locals and visitors during the peak travel period.
Security personnel have been reinforced at key junctions, while the deployment of traffic riders has been increased to ensure quicker response and real-time regulation. Volunteers have also been integrated into the system, with plans underway to further strengthen community participation in traffic control.
A dedicated interceptor vehicle is being actively deployed across different routes to monitor violations and support enforcement action. For improved coordination, the city has been divided into five operational sectors, each supervised by senior officers to ensure quicker decision-making and localized control.
To reduce congestion in upper Shimla, tourist traffic is being rerouted via Shoghi through the Mehli bypass corridor. At the same time, the police are actively using social media platforms to circulate live traffic updates, advisories, and alternative route suggestions for commuters.
Officials noted that despite the combined pressure of tourist inflow and Panchayat election duties, coordinated planning and additional manpower deployment have helped maintain manageable traffic conditions across the district.
Authorities reaffirmed that ensuring road safety and public convenience remains their highest priority as Shimla continues to witness heavy seasonal footfall.
