Olympic Day Run Highlights Sports Push in Himachal

On the occasion of International Olympic Day, CM Sukhu flagged off the Olympic Run from his official residence, Oak Over. The run concluded at the Indira Gandhi State Sports Complex in Shimla via the CTO route, with around 200 athletes participating in both men’s and women’s categories.

Extending greetings on the occasion, the Chief Minister reiterated the State Government’s commitment to promoting sports across Himachal Pradesh. He said that sports are an important form of education and encouraged athletes to work with dedication to bring laurels to the State, just as students excel in academics. He also said that efforts are being made to host Khelo India events in Himachal Pradesh and highlighted the development of robust sports infrastructure in Bilaspur, Kangra, Una, and Hamirpur districts for the benefit of youth.

He further informed that a Centre of Excellence for Sports is being established at Nadaun in Hamirpur district at a cost of ₹150 crore, which is expected to be completed by October this year. The Chief Minister said that sports instill discipline, teamwork, and perseverance among youth, which are essential for success in life. He also urged young people to support the State Government’s anti-drug campaign and contribute towards building a drug-free and healthy society.

Sukhu also announced a significant increase in cash rewards for medal winners in international sporting events. The cash award for Olympic, Paralympic, and Winter Olympic gold medallists has been raised from ₹3 crore to ₹5 crore. Similarly, the reward for Asian Games and Para Asian Games gold medallists has been increased from ₹50 lakh to ₹4 crore, while Commonwealth Games and Para Commonwealth Games gold medallists will now receive ₹3 crore instead of ₹50 lakh.
