The two-day state-level sports event organized by the Himachal Education Committee commenced at Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Him Rashmi Campus, Vikasnagar, Shimla. Former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur inaugurated the event. In his address, he praised Vidya Bharati’s efforts in combining education with values, a unique endeavor that many institutions lack.
Thakur emphasized the importance of nurturing both education and values, attributing the erosion of India’s cultural heritage to the British colonial influence. He highlighted the significance of physical health in tandem with education, stating that a healthy body is essential for effective learning. He encouraged the athletes to pursue their talents and uphold values in their lives.
The event saw Mohan Singh Kesta, Chairman of Himachal Education Committee, as the main speaker. He lauded Vidya Bharati for providing education based on Indian values across the nation through Saraswati Vidya Mandirs. The organization annually conducts sports events from school to national levels. Vidya Bharati’s efforts have earned recognition from the School Games Federation of India.
The opening of the 33rd Regional Sports Meet featured competitions in various age categories and disciplines like chess, table tennis, volleyball, yoga, badminton, and more. Around 450 athletes from seven districts participated.
In the competitions held on the inaugural day, Kullu district’s under-14 girls’ volleyball team secured the first position. In the under-14 chess category, Shimla district claimed the first spot, while Bilaspur secured second place. Similar successes were achieved by various districts in different age groups and sports. Overall, the event highlighted the importance of holistic development, combining education with sports and values for the betterment of society.
