Bishop Cotton School in Shimla (BCS) and Auckland House School celebrated the magic of theater with their joint production of the iconic 1970s musical ‘Grease.’

The schools presented this musical as a moonlit outdoor production, which was a delightful showcase of the acting, musical, and dance talents of their students. The event drew a stream of guests, including Bollywood stars, and was a memorable experience for all.

Notable guests in attendance included actress Nimrat Kaur, renowned for her role in ‘The Lunchbox,’ and her upcoming movie, ‘Sajini Shinde Ka Viral Video,’ scheduled for release on October 27. Additionally, actor and BCS alumnus Faisal Rashid joined from Mumbai.

The Director General of HP Police, Mr. Sanjay Kundu, was also present. The Most Revd Pradeep Samantaroy, Chairman of the Board of Governors for both Shimla schools, graced the event.

Actress Nimrat Kaur expressed her delight in visiting the school and commended the students for their outstanding performances. She also had an interactive session with senior BCS boys, sharing insights into her career and showcasing the trailer of her new film, where she plays a police officer.

This joint production between the heritage schools marked a significant collaboration, with Auckland House School students portraying the ‘Pink Ladies’ and Bishop Cotton School students taking on the ‘T-Birds’ gang, delivering an exceptional performance.

Bishop Samantaroy, Chairman of the Board of Governors, congratulated everyone involved and emphasized the lasting impact this experience will have on the students’ lives.

The musical ‘Grease,’ famous for the film adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, ran from October 18 to 20, 2023, at BCS, where a special stage was erected for the occasion. A one-off special highlight show is scheduled for October 25, 2023, at the Gothic Gaiety Theatre in Shimla.

The production showcased the talents of students from Bishop Cotton School and Auckland House, with live performances by the BCS school band, choir, and musicians. The rehearsals, direction, and production were led by dedicated teachers and students, with the school’s Art Department and carpenters contributing to the stage’s design. The story of ‘Grease’ set in an American high school in the 1950s, explores themes of teenage angst and first love, accompanied by iconic dance routines.

‘Grease’ Background: ‘Grease’ is a musical set in 1959 at the fictional Rydell High School in Northwest Chicago, revolving around the ‘greasers’ subculture. Originally a Broadway hit, it achieved even more significant success as a movie in 1978, launching the careers of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
