The Executive Members of the State Association of Medical College Teachers (SAMDCOT) from IGMC Shimla met with the Hon’ble Chief Minister to discuss pressing concerns impacting faculty members at IGMC and other medical colleges across the state. Key outcomes from this important meeting are highlighted below.
Non-Practice Allowance (NPA) Adjustment for Faculty
The Hon’ble Chief Minister recognized the discrepancy in the Non-Practice Allowance (NPA) between Assistant Professors who were previously Medical Officers and those recruited through the Public Service Commission. A commitment was made to resolve this issue, ensuring that faculty members appointed as Assistant Professors receive equitable NPA, restoring fairness in compensation across ranks.
Study Leave Pay Adjustment for Doctors Pursuing Higher Education
A key decision was made regarding study leave pay for doctors enrolled in advanced degree programs such as MD, MS, DM, or MCh. Currently, doctors receive only 40% of their pay during study leave, creating financial stress. The Chief Minister agreed to waive this restriction, offering full pay during study leave, which is expected to allow faculty members to concentrate fully on their studies and professional development.
Standardized Vacation Entitlement for Medical Faculty
Another positive step was the standardization of faculty vacation entitlements, bringing the total to 45 days annually. This adjustment aligns with vacation policies in other medical institutions across India and will help improve work-life balance for medical faculty members, further enhancing their job satisfaction and productivity.
Positive Outlook for Medical Faculty and Healthcare in Himachal Pradesh
The Chief Minister’s constructive responses to these issues indicate a promising direction for addressing the concerns of IGMC Shimla and other medical college faculty members. The adjustments in NPA, study leave pay, and vacation entitlements will not only support the professional growth of doctors and professors but also improve the quality of healthcare services in the state.
