Bumper Apple Haul Despite Damaged Roads

Despite widespread damage to road infrastructure caused by relentless monsoon rains, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a significant increase in apple market arrivals during the current harvesting season. Between June 27 and September 15, 2025, the state transported a total of 1,73,74,204 apple boxes (each weighing 20 kg) to various markets, marking a considerable rise from 1,23,18,924 boxes recorded during the same period last year.

This improvement was made possible through the consistent efforts of the Public Works Department (PWD), working under the supervision of CM Sukhu. Despite adverse weather conditions and severely damaged roads, authorities ensured that key routes were either restored or temporarily reconnected in record time to support apple transportation. Government machinery remained active even during peak damage periods to minimize disruptions for growers.

Region-wise, the Shimla and Kinnaur APMC markets recorded the highest influx, with 1,09,86,863 boxes sold compared to 77,40,164 last year. Solan APMC recorded 24,90,835 boxes (up from 22,18,685), while Kullu APMC saw a jump to 20,88,374 boxes from 14,03,392. However, the Mandi APMC experienced a dip, receiving 16,81,055 boxes compared to 89,19,893 last year, likely due to logistical challenges in that region.

In addition to managing transportation, the State Government extended support through the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). Under this scheme, HPMC procured over 55,000 metric tonnes of apples, more than double the amount recorded last year. To facilitate this, 274 collection centres were set up across the state, although a few remain unreachable due to ongoing road blockages. Responding swiftly, the Chief Minister ordered the deployment of additional trucks to ensure timely lifting of apples from these centres.

Meanwhile, HPMC’s fruit processing plants at Parala (Shimla), Parwanoo (Solan), and Jarol (Mandi) are running at full capacity, collectively processing nearly 400 tonnes of apples daily. This has helped reduce wastage and ensure financial returns for growers even under challenging conditions.

Sukhu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of apple growers. He highlighted the introduction of the Universal Carton, aimed at standardizing packaging and ensuring fair prices, thus putting an end to the exploitation of horticulturists.
