Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s Principal Media Advisor Naresh Chauhan today credited senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the central government’s decision to conduct a nationwide caste-based census. Speaking to media in Shimla, Chauhan stated that the long-standing demand for a caste census, led consistently by Rahul Gandhi and the Indian National Congress, has finally been acknowledged due to continuous public and parliamentary pressure.

Congress Was Always Serious About Caste Census

Naresh Chauhan highlighted that the Congress Party has been sincere on this issue for over a decade. He stated, “Rahul Gandhi raised this demand across various platforms — from foot marches to the floor of Parliament. Despite resistance from the BJP-led central government, the Congress remained committed to the principle of social justice and inclusive governance.”

Chauhan condemned the BJP’s past dismissive attitude, where advocates of the caste census were labeled “urban Naxals.” “Now the same government has accepted the demand. If Congress leaders were ‘urban Naxals’ for raising this issue, are the current rulers in the same category now?” he asked.

Data-Driven Development for Marginalized Communities

He clarified that the intention behind the caste census was never to score political points but to establish a data-driven foundation for inclusive growth. “Rahul Gandhi’s vision is that the government must have accurate data on all caste groups to ensure equitable development,” said Chauhan.

He emphasized that a caste-based census will help bring Dalits, OBCs, tribals, and other marginalized communities into the mainstream and support policies that create equal opportunities.

BJP Should Explain the Delay

Chauhan demanded clarity from the central government regarding its roadmap, budget provisions, and timeline for the caste census. He alleged that the announcement was politically motivated, given the upcoming Bihar elections. “This isn’t about headlines. The Centre cannot take credit for a decision it long resisted.”

Condemnation of Pahalgam Terror Attack

Naresh Chauhan also expressed grief and condemnation over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, calling it a “shameful and tragic” incident. He said the entire nation stands in solidarity with the victims.
