Taking serious note of the large volumes of forest wood and logs that recently accumulated in the Pandoh Dam following a cloudburst and flash floods, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhu has ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry into the incident.
According to a government spokesperson, the investigation aims to uncover the reasons behind the unusual accumulation of timber, which was reportedly swept down from the hills during last week’s extreme weather. Viral videos and images showing logs floating in the dam sparked public concern and prompted calls for a formal probe.
The government emphasized that its initial focus was on saving lives and providing immediate relief to flood-affected areas. However, criticism from opposition leaders, particularly the BJP, drew attention to the issue of potential illegal logging. The state government responded by accusing the previous BJP administration of inaction on similar issues and alleged ties to illegal timber networks or “Van Mafia.”
The spokesperson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental protection, reiterating its goal to make Himachal Pradesh a ‘Green Energy State’ by March 31, 2026. Any acts undermining this mission will be strictly dealt with under the law, the statement said.
