CM Sukhu today felicitated the winners of the Virbhadra Singh Memorial Pro-Boxing International Championship at Shimla’s historic Ridge. Indian boxer Yashpal claimed victory, bringing pride to the nation with his stellar performance.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister lauded the championship as a fitting tribute to former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and praised the organizers for spreading awareness about drug abuse through sports. He emphasized the state government’s firm resolve to combat the drug menace, stating that the anti-drug campaign has gained strong momentum, particularly among the youth. “We will further intensify this drive and take stringent action against drug traffickers,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to youth and sports, the CM noted key steps such as a significant increase in prize money for international-level medalists and special leave provisions for athletes competing at various levels. These changes, he said, aim to encourage sports participation and keep youth engaged in positive pursuits.
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, speaking on the occasion, said the event was a tribute to Virbhadra Singh’s contributions and also a message to steer youth away from substance abuse. The championship, featuring five professional boxers each from India and Russia, was earlier inaugurated by Governor Shukla.
MLAs Harish Janartha and Sanjay Awasthi, Mayor Surinder Chauhan, HIMUDA Vice Chairman Yashwant Chhajta, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
