CM Sukhu today met the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, and raised several long-pending issues related to Himachal Pradesh, seeking their early resolution.
He strongly reiterated the State’s demand for its 7.19 percent share in the Union Territory of Chandigarh, citing provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, and arguing that Himachal Pradesh is entitled to its due share as a successor state. He also pointed out that Chandigarh was developed from the resources of undivided Punjab, while other successor states have long benefited from its assets.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for an additional Himachal Sadan in Chandigarh, stating that the existing Himachal Bhawan is inadequate for the growing number of students, patients, and visitors from the State. He added that a 4.736-acre site in Sector 52 has already been identified for the proposed facility in consultation with the Chandigarh Administration.
He also raised the issue of pending dues from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), noting that Himachal Pradesh is yet to receive its share of 13,066 million units of power and related financial benefits, despite recognition of its entitlement.
Sukhu further referred to the Shanan Hydroelectric Project in Mandi district, stating that the site falls outside the “transferred territories” under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966. He added that the 99-year lease expired on 2 March 2024, and therefore no legal rights under the lease survive. He expressed confidence that all issues would be resolved through dialogue and the spirit of cooperative federalism.
