At a landmark technology transfer event held today at the CSIR Headquarters in New Delhi, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) officially handed over commercial rights for multiple eco-friendly innovations developed by the CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR-CLRI), Chennai, and the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), New Delhi. Addressing the gathering, CSIR Director General Dr. N. Kalaiselvi stressed the critical need to accelerate the translation of laboratory research into real-world applications, noting that robust public-private partnerships are essential for scaling indigenous technologies that deliver tangible economic, environmental, and societal benefits.
The innovations transferred by CSIR-CLRI focus on converting hazardous industrial waste into valuable raw materials in line with circular economy principles. Key among these is a patented technology that extracts chromium-free protein hydrolysate from non-biodegradable chrome shavings—a major solid waste issue in tanneries—and converts it into reusable syntans, reducing total dissolved solids (TDS) in post-tanning wastewater by up to 50 percent. Additionally, CSIR-CLRI unveiled a process to treat spent pickling acid from steel processing, recovering iron and chloride to produce commercial-grade ammonium chloride and pigment-grade iron oxide.
Addressing infrastructure and transportation safety, CSIR-CRRI introduced two market-ready road solutions. The first is ClariVisor, an in-vehicle glare mitigation device for four-wheelers designed to fit seamlessly into standard OEM sun visor mounts without structural modifications. The second is a Two-Pack Onsite Pothole Filling Mix, a solvent-free, cold-application material that allows rapid, on-site road repairs without the energy-intensive heating required by conventional hot-mix asphalt, enabling faster traffic restoration and significantly lower emissions.
