A dynamic panel discussion titled “A Global India Through Independent Cinema: A Women’s Panel” at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) highlighted the evolving role of women in independent filmmaking, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and creative freedom as defining elements of women’s cinema.

The panel featured actor-filmmaker Rajni Basumatary, cinematographer Fowzia Fathima, actor-filmmaker Rachel Griffiths, and actor Meenakshi Jayan, who shared insights into how women’s personal and professional journeys are shaping the future of independent cinema.

Panelists discussed how empathy underpins women’s storytelling. Fowzia noted that empathy allows filmmakers to transform local narratives into globally resonant stories, while Rajni highlighted women’s attention to subtle details, giving voice to underrepresented experiences.

The discussion emphasized increasing visibility and support for women in the industry. Fowzia shared the growth of the Indian Women Cinematographers’ Collective, which now includes nearly 200 members and fosters mentorship, collaboration, and opportunities for emerging talent. Rajni recounted how the collective helped connect her with cinematographers for her projects, while Meenakshi highlighted government initiatives, such as Kerala State funding, that support women-led films. The panel also acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as men submitting projects under women’s names, stressing the need for vigilance.

Rachel Griffiths spoke candidly about managing a filmmaking career while raising three children, suggesting alternate work models to support women. Fowzia reflected on returning to her craft post-motherhood and her upcoming commercial film Train, starring Vijay Sethupathi.

Panelists discussed the growing presence of women in production and decision-making roles. Meenakshi and Rajni emphasized how OTT platforms are creating richer roles and opportunities for women, while Rachel highlighted the importance of pay parity and male allies in achieving meaningful change.

Rajni and Meenakshi stressed grounding films in local realities and exploring gender justice through all-women casts. Rachel advised filmmakers to trust that the right stories will find their audience. The panel also shared film recommendations: Dangal, The Power of the Dog, Article 15, Eye in the Sky, and Shiva Baby.

The session ended on a note of camaraderie and possibility, with the panel envisioning collaborations that could further strengthen independent cinema. Meenakshi praised the progressive Australian film industry, and Rachel suggested the women might work together in the future—symbolizing a collective imagination shaping the next era of independent filmmaking.

Founded in 1952, the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is South Asia’s oldest and largest film festival, hosted jointly by the NFDC, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and the Entertainment Society of Goa. IFFI combines restored classics, experimental cinema, international competitions, cultural showcases, masterclasses, and the WAVES Film Bazaar, creating a global platform for cinematic innovation. The 56th edition, held from November 20–28, 2025, celebrates diverse languages, genres, and voices against Goa’s stunning coastal backdrop.
