Fortis Hospital Mohali’s Department of Gynae Oncology is making significant strides in the treatment of complex gynaecological cancers, offering patients a unique blend of advanced technology and personalised care. Under the leadership of Dr. Shweta Tahlan, Consultant, Gynae Onco-Surgery, the hospital has successfully treated several patients using a combination of open, minimally invasive, and robot-assisted surgeries powered by the state-of-the-art Da Vinci Xi 4th Generation Robotic System.

Speaking at a press conference in Shimla, Dr. Tahlan emphasized the hospital’s commitment to patient-centric, precision-based care for gynaecological cancers including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar cancers, and rare malignancies like sarcomas. “Each case requires expert surgical judgement, multi-disciplinary planning, and customised treatment to achieve optimal outcomes while preserving quality of life,” she said.

Successful Patient Cases Highlighted:

  • Elderly, High-Risk Patient (Age 84):
A patient with uterine cancer and underlying heart disease underwent successful robot-assisted surgery. The minimally invasive approach enabled reduced blood loss, smaller incisions, and a fast recovery, with the patient resuming daily activities within three days.

  • Young Woman with Fertility Concerns (Age 20):
Diagnosed with early-stage rare ovarian cancer, the patient received fertility-sparing surgery. Dr. Tahlan preserved her uterus and unaffected ovary while completely removing the tumor. Her recovery was smooth, and her menstrual cycle resumed, preserving her fertility potential.

  • Advanced Ovarian Cancer (Age 60):
This patient underwent a highly complex Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) followed by HIPEC (Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy), a specialized treatment available only at high-end tertiary care centers. The surgery was successful, with a swift and uneventful recovery, highlighting Fortis Mohali’s advanced surgical capabilities.

Dr. Tahlan reiterated, “Gynaecologic oncology is a highly specialised field that requires tailored treatment protocols based on the cancer’s stage, histopathology, molecular characteristics, and individual patient needs. Fortis Mohali remains committed to delivering world-class care that is both technologically advanced and deeply personalised.”

These success stories reflect Fortis Mohali’s leadership in gynaecologic oncology and its continued pursuit of excellence in women’s cancer care.
