On the directives of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Himachal Pradesh’s Health and Family Welfare Department has initiated the process to recruit 228 General Wing Medical Officers. Aimed at bolstering healthcare delivery and alleviating doctor shortages in state-run institutions, a formal proposal has been submitted to the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission. The hiring drive encompasses 158 newly created positions alongside 70 backlog vacancies.
In tandem with these general wing appointments, the state is addressing specialized care needs. The Department of Medical Education and Research has set in motion the process to fill an Assistant Professor position in Gastroenterology via promotion. This follows the state’s recent deployment of 194 doctors—including 118 specialists—to various medical colleges, civil, regional, zonal, and community health centers after they finished their post-graduation and senior residency tenures.
According to a Health and Family Welfare Department spokesperson, these ongoing recruitment and posting efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to upgrading state health infrastructure. By filling existing vacancies and distributing new medical professionals across Himachal Pradesh, the administration aims to ease the burden on current hospital staff while providing quality, accessible medical care closer to residents’ homes.
