In a visionary move towards a sustainable future, the Himachal Pradesh state government has unveiled an extensive plan to develop two Gram Panchayats in each district as Green Panchayats on a pilot basis. The cornerstone of this transformative initiative is the establishment of solar power projects ranging from 500 kilowatts to one megawatt capacity in these Panchayats. This ambitious endeavor is backed by a provision of Rs. 50 crore allocated under the Himachal Pradesh Power Sector Development Programme.

Solar Power for Green Panchayats
Himurja, a state government undertaking, has taken the lead in implementing these solar projects by identifying the Gram Panchayats. Each solar project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 2.10 crore, is expected to generate 2,250 units of power per day. This translates to an annual income of approximately Rs. 25 lakh from each project once operational.
Becoming a ‘Green Energy State’
The Himachal Pradesh government has set an ambitious target to transform the entire state into a ‘Green Energy State’ by March 31, 2026. To achieve this, active efforts are being made to engage citizens and empower Panchayati Raj institutions, which will play a pivotal role in achieving this green vision.
Youth Participation and Employment Opportunities
A key aspect of this initiative is the involvement of local youth. The government is offering a 40 percent subsidy to young individuals for setting up solar power projects ranging from 500 KW to 2 MW on their own land or leased land. The power generated from these projects will be procured by the State Electricity Board, ensuring a sustainable source of income for the youth.
Promoting Electric Mobility
In addition to solar power, the government is taking steps to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and carbon emissions by promoting electric mobility. To encourage the adoption of electric buses and trucks, a subsidy of 50 percent with a maximum limit of Rs. 50 lakh has been introduced, promising employment opportunities for the youth.
E-charging Stations for Electric Vehicles
Furthermore, the government has laid the groundwork for the development of e-charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) with a 50 percent subsidy provision. A comprehensive policy for EV-charging stations is in the works, supporting the transition to eco-friendly transportation.
This green energy initiative not only conserves resources and addresses climate change impacts but also strengthens the state’s economy. Himachal Pradesh is poised to become a shining example of sustainable development, with its commitment to clean energy and a greener future for all.
