In a landmark move to integrate sports with academics and support athletes holistically, HP CM Sukhu has directed schools to grant ‘special leave attendance‘ to students participating in National and International sports events. This ensures that athletes representing the state or country are not penalized with absenteeism that could affect their academic performance.
Earlier, students participating in recognized sports competitions were marked absent, impacting their attendance records and internal assessments. Now, participation certificates or letters issued by authorized sports bodies will serve as valid proof for special leave, aligning attendance norms with those used in School Games Federation of India (SGFI) events.
Calling it a step toward a more balanced educational approach, the Chief Minister emphasized that the integration of sports and academics is vital for the overall development of students. Schools have been instructed to record these days as special leave in the attendance register, reinforcing the government’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent without compromising on education.
In a parallel and unprecedented step, the state government also disbursed Rs. 14.77 crore in cash awards to 21 International medal winners. Paralympian Nishad Kumar received the highest reward of Rs. 7.80 crore, followed by Ajay Kumar (Rs. 2.50 crore), and Vikas Thakur (Rs. 2 crore). International kabaddi players and cricketer Renuka Singh Thakur were also honored with substantial rewards.
Further affirming its support, the state provided diet and travel allowances to over 650 players, with Rs. 76.98 lakh distributed as diet money and Rs. 6.01 lakh for travel assistance.
Looking ahead, the government is constructing an international-level sports stadium in Nadaun (Hamirpur) to provide top-tier infrastructure for future athletes. These collective initiatives underline the message that in Himachal Pradesh, “sports is not just a passion but a priority.”
This progressive outlook aims to establish Himachal as a powerhouse in national and international sports, ensuring athletes are supported both in their journey and achievements.
