The Himachal Pradesh government is stepping up development efforts in the state’s tribal regions through sustained investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, livelihoods and social welfare.
Spread across Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Pangi and Bharmour, the tribal areas cover 42.49 percent of the state’s geographical area but are home to only 3.92 lakh people. Despite challenging terrain and harsh weather, the government has ensured 100 percent electrification and safe drinking water in all tribal habitations.
The state continues to allocate nine percent of its annual development outlay under the Tribal Sub Plan, with Rs. 890.28 crore earmarked for 2024-25 and Rs. 638.73 crore under the Scheduled Tribe Component for 2025-26.
In education, thousands of tribal students are benefiting from scholarship schemes, while four Eklavya Model Residential Schools are producing outstanding academic results. Healthcare services have also been strengthened with upgraded hospitals, health centres and Adarsh Swasthya Sansthans in Lahaul-Spiti and Bharmour offering specialist medical care.
To improve livelihoods, the government is promoting agriculture, skill development and self-employment. More than 3,200 tribal women have become Lakhpati Didis through Self-Help Groups, while eligible women are receiving Rs. 1,500 per month under the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana.
Infrastructure, tourism, renewable energy and digital connectivity are also being expanded. Homestays, solar projects and natural farming are being promoted to generate employment, while BharatNet has improved digital access in remote villages. Through the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, tribal villages are witnessing integrated development in drinking water, connectivity and other essential services.
The government said its focus remains on ensuring inclusive development in tribal areas while preserving their unique cultural heritage and strengthening the rural economy.
