Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh is set to host its maiden “Kinnaur Bird Festival” from May 8 to 10, marking a unique initiative to celebrate and conserve the region’s rich Himalayan biodiversity.

The three-day event will be held at Goli in Kalpa Kande and will align with global conservation observances such as the Global Big Day and Himalayan Bird Count on May 9, strengthening bird conservation efforts and raising awareness about fragile mountain ecosystems.

Deputy Commissioner Kinnaur Amit Kumar Sharma said the festival aims to showcase the district’s exceptional biodiversity while deepening the bond between local communities and nature. He added that the initiative will also promote eco-friendly tourism in line with sustainable development goals, while preserving cultural traditions and ecological balance.

A special focus will be placed on youth engagement. Around 20 participants will undergo Nature Guide Training to become future biodiversity ambassadors, while 30 students will join interactive sessions to build awareness on environmental conservation.

The festival will bring together researchers, authors, and nature experts from across Himachal Pradesh, who will conduct workshops and field activities to share practical knowledge on Himalayan ecology.

Local artisans will also participate, presenting traditional crafts and cultural heritage, adding a community-driven cultural dimension to the event.

Organised jointly by the district administration, Tourism Department, Forest Department and other stakeholders, the festival is expected to emerge as a key platform linking conservation, community participation, and sustainable tourism in the region.
